Check a QR code before Mom or Dad scans it

If a QR code appears in an unexpected text, email, bill, parking meter, or urgent notice, pause before scanning. Preview the destination and use a website or phone number you already trust when the request is unexpected.

Do this now

For an unexpected QR code, do not scan immediately.

If your phone previews the URL, inspect the domain for misspellings or substitutions.

For a payment, account, delivery, court, or security request, independently open the organization’s known official site or app instead.

If credentials were already entered on a suspicious destination, change the affected password and any reused password.

Don’t do this

Do not assume a printed QR code is trustworthy because it is physically attached to a sign or meter.
Do not scan an unexpected QR code simply because the message creates urgency.
Do not enter passwords or payment details until the destination is independently verified.
